My husband LOVES figs. He likes that they are not too sweet and loves the crunch of the seeds. I love figs as well, but heck, I love most fruit.
I grew up with a black mission fig tree in my parents yard but really did not start [...]
Well, I have a little sad news to report. My Alphonso Mango tree has died. It survived the winter and put out a flush of new growth and inflorescence. I felt pretty confident that I might even get some small mangoes off the tree this year.
Unfortunately the tree was killed by a mole. I saw [...]
This is my alphonso mango tree I got from Plantogram. It came looking really healthy and has grown alot this year. You can see the new growth as well as 5 huge inflorescence. It is over 4.5 feet tall.
Here is a close up of the flower bud with some small, pea size [...]
This year we are going to attempt to give our tropical plants a little protection for the 10 or so days when the temps get a little too low for their liking. I wanted something that would allow light in but help protect from any light frost that is easy to pull up when the [...]
Well, just here to report that I got a mango to ripen here in Northern California. I kept the plant outdoors without any winter protection and it went through 2 winters. I think if I am able to protect it through this winter I will be able to get mangoes on both my glenn and [...]
I just wanted to update you all on my mango tree experiment. My Carrie, Ice Cream and Lancetilla all died. The ice cream and carrie were doomed from the start and when I got them, they were not healthy and had this weird goopy material on them. They never really did much and I eventually [...]
We are in the midst of cherimoya season. Boy are these fruit delicious. I ordered a box from calimoya.com to see if there was a difference in quality from cherimoya.com but i am happy to report that they are both quality places to order cherimoyas. I was able to try some varieties of cherimoyas that [...]
Just a quick update on the cherimoyas…yes that is cherimoyas, plural. I got a fino de jete from Roger Meyer. It is also smaller than the chaffey I got last year from Laverne but hopefully it will catch up soon,
The Fino de jete arrived without leaves and just this week I noticed bud swelling.
[...]
I received my trees from Raintree on thursday so we decided to plant all the trees on sunday before they came out of dormancy (it rained all day saturday).
Here is the order as I received it and out of the box.
I ordered:
1 Old Green Gage (Reine Claude Doree) on citation rootstock
[...]
I ordered some cherimoyas from Dario at cherimoya.com because I want to purchase one more cherimoya tree and wanted to taste a few varieties before committing to my next tree. Dario did a great job sending the variety of cherimoyas to me. Not only were they perfectly wrapped but he also threw in a sapote [...]
Well, it is officially winter. We had our first low temps of 29 degrees when an “arctic blast” came through. I will post about the damage in another thread.
This cold weather makes me wish to be in the tropics. Here are some pics from our trip to vietnam.
Hanging out under a large Mango [...]
We bought our Chaffey cherimoya tree this spring and never got around to putting it in the ground. The tree lost all of its leaves in April and looked dead so we neglected it but the tree came back!!
Even though it would have been more ideal to plant the tree inground in late winter/early [...]
Here is an updated picture of my Lancetilla Mango tree in a container. It is the most vigorous grower out of my 4 mango trees. It was 4.5 feet when I got it but I pruned it down to about 3 feet to keep the tree at a more manageable height and to also help [...]
Here is a quick update of my mango trees. I bought them in January/February 2009 and did not protect them during the cold spells we had and they took quite a beating. They got hailed on but still survived.
This is some new growth on the Carrie Mango tree. I cut this tree way back [...]
I decided to leave some of the mangos on the Lancetilla tree to see if/when they drop. I thinned about 4-5 off this branch and am surprised to see that so far, the tree has not dropped any of the mangos. I wonder how large they will get.
Well I posted about 2 weeks ago about something biting into my unripe peaches so we had to move the tree (luckily it was still potted) and my Mother-in-law bought some tulle to protect it. so far, so good…we have only lost 1 more peach. They are delicious.
Our babcock peaches are almost ready. We are so excited. This tree is still in a pot because I have not decided where to plant it. The other day we saw a squirrel on the fence headed towards our peach tree and we were all oohing over how cute it was.
[...]
Well I know I said i was going to prune all the mangos off the tree but I could not help but leave some on. This is the Lancetilla Mango and I have pruned about 95% of the mangos off but had to leave these ones. I guess I am just trying to see how [...]
This is what I have been snacking on…My mom brought them back from orange county and they are fantastic! Even my husband who is not a fruit fanatic like I am cannot get enough of the mangosteen and wants to try to germinate the seeds…i think we have a better chance of winning [...]
This is my lancetilla mango tree and it has HUGE inflorescence and now some itty bitty mangos. These will most likely fall off on their own but if they don’t I will have to thin them out myself as the tree is way to small to support the weight of a mango. Lancetilla mangos are [...]
