So I just posted about what I harvested from the garden yesterday. I have been anxiously waiting for my first batch of tomatillos so I could make some salsa verde. I LOVE salsa verde….it is my favorite salsa and I can practically drink it.
We had some friends come over so I thought I [...]
It was a cooler spring and summer but the garden does not seem to mind much. The plants are happy and producing yummy goodness for the family daily. This is what I picked from the garden yesterday. It doesn’t look like much BUT my 2 sons eat the cherry tomatoes [...]
Another great year in the garden. I truly do not know why more people do not grow their own food. The quality and variety available is so much better than what you can get in the stores. Also, if you have the room and a sunny spot, it is not hard to grow if you [...]
It is berry season here in our little garden and the timing could not be more perfect.
The kids LOVE picking berries when they are out back playing. The eat them throughout the day and know how to wait for the berries to get really ripe before they pick them.
Here are some of our [...]
Well, summer has officially started. We spent the week either at the beach or pool and even went to Olema for a quick “camping” trip. We sort of cheated and did not stay the night…
We also got our first tomatoes of the season. Delicious, orange sungold cherry tomatoes.
I wish I was able to [...]
We have been composting all of our kitchen scraps soiled paper etc. for a quite a while now, but we failed to rat-proof our compost bin when we first built it.
As you can imagine this resulted in a very happy family of rats that took up residence under the wood pile adjacent to our [...]
The summer gardening season definitely started out slow. It took forever for the tomato, pepper, and melon plants to get going. All my watermelon died this year but i will give them another go next year.
Here are some pics of my tomatoes and peppers on the plant.
The first pic is of a giant [...]
Yup, that’s what we are eatting right now. We just picked the last of the sweet peas and pulled out the plants to make room for our summer garden.
Our strawberries are kicking butt. They are perfect and sweet. I actually got to try one today. I need to take pictures but it is so [...]
Well this is our second year with blueberry bushes and so far they are doing pretty good. They are loaded with berries this year with very little maintence. We also added a sharpblue blueberry bush to the mix because my mom found one at Costco. It had a few blossoms but no berries this year. [...]
I haven’t had much computer time so I have greatly neglected my blogs. Here is a brief summary of what is happening here.
The Waldo Peas that I planted last fall overwintered and are going gang-busters. We are picking sweat peas daily. Jackson loves to snack on them.
Babcock Peach Tree has fully blossomed and [...]
Hey everyone, This will be my second year gardening and I decided to try growing plants from seed. Last year I mostly grew things from seedlings (tomato, squash, melons, peppers) because I was really intimidated by the idea of having a light system, and fans occillating to make the plants stronger, etc. This year encouraged [...]
Spring is finally here. I am so excited to get back into the yard and start gardening. Here is a picture of my Babcock peach tree in bloom. We have cleared out the garden beds and are prepping the soil by adding compost.
I am taking pics of my progression trying to grow chayotes. I bought these chayote from Safeway in december and put them in a dark, cold cabinet in the garage for about a month. When the weather started getting warmer i brought them out and put them in [...]
Growing up, I remember my aunt growing this odd vegetable in her backyard. The plant was huge and took over her the shed in her backyard as well as the arbor that was about 10 feet x 10 feet. The plant was so monstrous and was completely covered [...]
I just started receiving all the gorgeous catalogs and am so excited for my 2010 garden. I think I have decided what I am going to plant in my vegetable Garden.
Here are repeats from last years garden I will grow again because they were easy and productive.
Herbs and greens:
Arugala- this is pretty [...]
My fall garden has not been as successful as my summer garden. I need to figure out the timing to put the seeds in. For the first round of beets I put the seeds in too quickly and the soil got too warm and the beets pre-maturely pushed themselves out of the soil and did [...]
I can’t believe we are still picking ripe tomatoes in November. Granted, they are not as sweet as they were in their peak but they are still quite yummy. I think next week I will pick the last of the green tomatoes and make fried green tomatoes with them. Yummy!!
I call this my “wild” arugala and lettuce because we planted it in the late spring but got hit by a hot spell so the plants pretty much just died before we could harvest much. The weather was just too warm and the planted bolted and seeded. Here is the bed with just a few [...]
For our fall garden, we decided to grow cauliflower, broccolli, swiss chard, beets, lettuce, and arugala….all the things that caterpillars LOVE to eat. To help protect our garden from these critters, we covered our garden with tulle. It was pretty expensive because Michael’s was having a 40% off sale.
Here is the shaded herb garden 1 month after planting…you can see the pics in the post below to see the progess it has made. Here we have some basil, cilantro, spinach, spring lettuce mix. I actually ended up pulling all of the spring mix out because in our wood garden bed a bunch of [...]
