This year we are going to attempt to give our tropical plants a little protection for the 10 or so days when the temps get a little too low for their liking. I wanted something that would allow light in but help protect from any light frost that is easy to pull up when the [...]
I just wanted to update you all on my mango tree experiment. My Carrie, Ice Cream and Lancetilla all died. The ice cream and carrie were doomed from the start and when I got them, they were not healthy and had this weird goopy material on them. They never really did much and I eventually [...]
Well, it is officially winter. We had our first low temps of 29 degrees when an “arctic blast” came through. I will post about the damage in another thread.
This cold weather makes me wish to be in the tropics. Here are some pics from our trip to vietnam.
Hanging out under a large Mango [...]
Here is an updated picture of my Lancetilla Mango tree in a container. It is the most vigorous grower out of my 4 mango trees. It was 4.5 feet when I got it but I pruned it down to about 3 feet to keep the tree at a more manageable height and to also help [...]
Here is a quick update of my mango trees. I bought them in January/February 2009 and did not protect them during the cold spells we had and they took quite a beating. They got hailed on but still survived.
This is some new growth on the Carrie Mango tree. I cut this tree way back [...]
I decided to leave some of the mangos on the Lancetilla tree to see if/when they drop. I thinned about 4-5 off this branch and am surprised to see that so far, the tree has not dropped any of the mangos. I wonder how large they will get.
It has been 1 week since I posted that I found some small little melons on the vine. Here is the last melon post for reference.

I cannot believe how quickly these melons grow. Every day you can see tremendous growth.
Here is the honey orange. It can barely fit in my [...]
Well I know I said i was going to prune all the mangos off the tree but I could not help but leave some on. This is the Lancetilla Mango and I have pruned about 95% of the mangos off but had to leave these ones. I guess I am just trying to see how [...]
This is what I have been snacking on…My mom brought them back from orange county and they are fantastic! Even my husband who is not a fruit fanatic like I am cannot get enough of the mangosteen and wants to try to germinate the seeds…i think we have a better chance of winning [...]
This is my lancetilla mango tree and it has HUGE inflorescence and now some itty bitty mangos. These will most likely fall off on their own but if they don’t I will have to thin them out myself as the tree is way to small to support the weight of a mango. Lancetilla mangos are [...]
Here are some more pictures of my tropical trees.
This is my Glenn Mango that I got in february. This is the only mango tree that I have that has not set any blossoms but look at the beautiful new growth. The leaves are just gorgeous.
I am surprised my mango trees are still alive. I purchased them in late january and we had some really cold weather (below freezing). They did not like that!!
We also chopped the Carrie and Icea Cream mango trees down 1.5 feet to make them shorter and eventually bushier. They are now about 2.5 ft. [...]
I know i haven’t posted in awhile, but my mango trees are in a standstill. Luckily they have survived the cold winter unprotected and we are headed towards some warm days so I hope to see some new growth soon.
I added a Glenn Mango tree to the collection as well as a Chaffey Cherimoya. [...]
This is called the “Hedgehog” style of cutting and eating Mangos. It is a great way of eating bit-sized pieces of mango without peeling the skin.
Hello Everyone,
It has been a week since the mango trees arrived by mail. They seem to be adjusting well to the weather here in Northern California. When they came they were in a little rough shape with some damaged leaves. I was expecting them to lose some of their leaves and they have dropped [...]
These mangos were tasted at the annual Mango Festival in Florida.

I found this information from Pine Island Nursery. They have a great selection of trees and I am already eyeing a few different species from their nursery. ‘Lancetilla’ is a Honduran selection made famous by Dr. Richard Campbell. Its debut at the 2001 International Mango Festival at Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens made it [...]
I got this information from Top Tropics website (where i purchased my plants). ‘Ice Cream’ is far and away the most popular of the “condo mangos.” Dwarf tree, small green fruit w/ yellow flesh. Flavored like name. The tree can easily be maintained at a height of just six feet making it ideal [...]
Here is some information about Carrie Mangos. I got the information from the website of the nursery where I purchased the plants. The flavor is by far the most outstanding feature of this variety. It has absolutely no fiber; Is extremely rich in flavor, sweet, aromatic and a pure pleasure to eat. You [...]
