The summer gardening season definitely started out slow. It took forever for the tomato, pepper, and melon plants to get going. All my watermelon died this year but i will give them another go next year.
Here are some pics of my tomatoes and peppers on the plant.
The first pic is of a giant [...]
Hey everyone, This will be my second year gardening and I decided to try growing plants from seed. Last year I mostly grew things from seedlings (tomato, squash, melons, peppers) because I was really intimidated by the idea of having a light system, and fans occillating to make the plants stronger, etc. This year encouraged [...]
I just started receiving all the gorgeous catalogs and am so excited for my 2010 garden. I think I have decided what I am going to plant in my vegetable Garden.
Here are repeats from last years garden I will grow again because they were easy and productive.
Herbs and greens:
Arugala- this is pretty [...]
I can’t believe we are still picking ripe tomatoes in November. Granted, they are not as sweet as they were in their peak but they are still quite yummy. I think next week I will pick the last of the green tomatoes and make fried green tomatoes with them. Yummy!!
I have started to neglect my garden as well as my blog. Having 2 boys under the age of 2 will do that to you. I barely have time to harvest everything and have not canned, dried, frozen anything for this winter .
Here is the cinder block garden. The tomatoes are doing great. I [...]
I really don’t get sick of taking pictures of my harvest. I am like a proud mother hen. I just think that vegetables out of the garden are so beautiful and colorful. Look at the neat, fused marvel striped near the center. The other ones near it look like perfect little pumpkins.
Behind the marvel [...]
My Black Krim has been producing these big tomatoes. Some of them are quite interesting looking. I think they are beautiful in their own right, or as the French say “belle-laide” or “ugly beautiful”.
Made this delicious salmon nicoise salad for the family on wednesday. It is a great way to showcase your harvest.
I found this recipe on foodtv.com

Sorry I have been too busy to update the blog. It has been a great season and we are harvesting and eating vegetables and herbs out of the garden everyday. We have been doing alot of entertaining and are able to give tomatoes to our friends and family. Next year I will probably only plant [...]
It has been 3 months since I planted the garden and we are having great harvests so far. These are from the 6 tomato plants from the cinderblock garden (the oaxacan jewels are from the wood garden). The wood garden bed is a few weeks behind so I expect those to start ripening soon and [...]
Here is the 3 month garden update.
Cinderblock garden: Is really taking off. The tomato plants are over 6 feet tall and producing really well. All of the plants have ripe tomatoes!!
Here are the cherry tomatoes (Sungold, Sun Sugar, Sugar Snack). We are picking a bunch everyday…more than we can eat. [...]
Just a little life update…our son was born last week. We are just so in love with our little guy. So far he is an easy and mellow baby and I take walks with him to see the garden once or twice a day.
While we were in the hospital, the garden took off.
Our [...]
It is petty easy to differentiate betwee the male and female blossoms if you know what to look for. This is a picture of a female lemon cucumber blossom. You can see what looks like a baby lemon cucumber on the end of the blosson (the green part of blossom). The male flower does not [...]
Here are some tomatoes I picked the other mornng. They are Stupice, Sungold, Sun Sugar, and Sugar Snack. The cherry tomatoes are really starting to ripen and we are picking them everyday.
This is a ripe sun sugar from the wood garden bed. This is the first ripe tomato from this garden bed. [...]
so I posted below about my son picking a green tomato off of my marvel striped plant. I was so disappointed because I could tell it was going to be one of the first beefsteaks to ripen.
Well, you know what they say about when life gives you lemons…make Lemonade.
I decided to make fried [...]
The Stupice set fruit at the end of May and grew to about golfball size. They have not grown much bigger and have just been sitting on the vine not doing anything. It has been very frustrating as these are supposed to be very early tomatoes.
Well I guess all my kvetching paid [...]
I was waiting for one of my bigger tomatos on the marvel striped to start ripening. It has turned from a darker green to lighter green color and I knew it was just a few days from blushing….unfortunately, what could have potentially been my first slicer tomato got pucked off the vine by my overeager [...]
So a few days ago I found the hornworm below on my sungold in my cinderblock bed.
Today when my husband and I were chilling, he saw a leaf on my marvel striped that had some holes on it. When he flipped it over, there was a baby hornworm. Another indication of the presence of [...]
The Cherry Tomatoes are all ripe and have been for the last week or so. We have probably had about 15 ripe cherries so far but have had friends and family over so they did not last long on the vine.
I have not yet done a side by side tasting of the sungold, sunsugar, [...]
We never got around to building a trellis for our lemon cucumber. We have been so busy with parties, family and friend visits that we kept on putting the task off. Of course we had a wicked heatspell (over 100 degrees) that caused our lemon cucmber to grow at a freakish rate.
All of a [...]
